Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy

This is a method of performing a biopsy on any lump or lesion a needle can get into in the body.

How it works…

A thin needle attached to a syringe is inserted through the skin into a lump or lesion and the fluid or tissue from this abnormal area is suctioned out. It is effectively used in the diagnosis of diseases, such as cancers, of the thyroid, salivary gland, breast, lymph nodes, liver, pancreas, etc. Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy is done either by physical examination or by CT guidance.

As opposed to the Core Needle biopsies, which are most common in Jamaica, Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy allows for less time for diagnosis, which may be the difference between life, death and effective treatment. It saves time and less screening is required.
